I’ve compiled a comprehensive quick list of cool events to check out around Houston. What makes these events unique is that they recur monthly and fall on specific days of the month. So if you really want to spice up your month, make an attempt to attend all of these!

Week 1

First Thursdays on Mid Main

Q: What is it?

A: Basically a big ol’ block party in the cool part of Mid Town.  Held the first Thursday of every month, the blocks of 3500 through 3700 Main (known as the Midtown Cultural Arts and Entertainment District) are shut down for a lively night of libations and food.  The shops stay open later and music along the block plays all night.

This month’s First Thursday (on May 4th) benefited BikeHouston with The Blaggards and Texas Gold Sprints along with the Winbern Market presented by Urban Harvest.

Week 2

Second Saturdays – Open Studios

Q: What is it?

A: On the second Saturday of each month, the artists of Sawyer Yards (The Silos, Silver Street, Spring Street Studios, and Winter Street Studios) open their studios to the public from 2-5pm. Spend an afternoon wandering through four re-purposed warehouses and discover an extensive selection of painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clothing, textiles, printmaking, mixed media and more.

Week 3

Grown Up Story Time (GUST) presented by Boo Town (every Third Tuesday of the month)

Q: What is it?

A: BooTown a local, non-profit theater company that creates original performance events.  GUST is where people send stories and the best ones are read aloud by a rotating crack-squad of expert story readers at Rudyard’s British Pub, a bar and venue located in the heart of Montrose. Part theater, part comedy show, all fun. It starts at 8pm and 10pm and is only $5.

Last Week

The Summer Series at Sawyer Yards on the last Friday of June and July (limited time event!)

Q: What is it?

A: The artists at Sawyer Yards will host you for a night of art, music, & friends! Explore their buildings, meet new artists, sip on a refreshing summer cocktail & enjoy. It’s essentially like their Second Saturdays (see above) except open later and with cocktails.
